Magic is the art making the impossible seem possible and allowing the audience to suspend their disbelief for entertainment. Wikipedia describes magic as such:

“Magic, which encompasses the subgenres of illusion, stage magic, and close up magic, is a performing art in which audiences are entertained by tricks or illusions of seemingly impossible feats using natural means. It is to be distinguished from paranormal magic which are effects claimed to be created through supernatural means. It is one of the oldest performing arts in the world.”

So if they use “natural means” how do magic tricks work then? One of the most famous magicians in the world claimed his mind was what facilitated his magical escapes:

“My Brain is the key that sets me free.”

Whether the magician is performing pure sleight of hand, or elaborate stage illusions, they will often use everything at their disposal, from pure speed (“the hand is quicker than the eye” they say) to optical illusions and principles of attention misdirection, in order to accomplish magic in the minds of the spectators. Above all, the objective is entertainment though, and some of the best magicians combine other elements of entertainment with their magic, and relating to the audience on a personal level.

“Long experience has taught me that the crux of my fortunes is whether I can radiate good will toward my audience. There is only one way to do it and that is to feel it. You can fool the eyes and minds of the audience, but you cannot fool their hearts.”
